This database marks the beginning of an ambitious project. GM Michael Roiz is planning to provide a complete repertoire for White after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 d5 4.cxd5

The current database is dedicated to the Carlsbad Variation arising after 4…exd5 5.Bg5 c6. The second and final part of the project will feature the highly topical Semi-Tarrasch arising after 4…Nxd5 as well as some minor lines after 4…exd5.

The current database consists of 12 theoretical chapters, 12 interactive test positions, a Memory Booster, and Video Version with approx. 3h running time.

Let’s take a brief look at the content of the database.

The starting position of the current survey arises after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 d5 4.cxd5 exd5 5.Bg5 c6 6.e3

diagram-2-ecac16bd44

At this point, Black has a variety of different setups. GM Michael Roiz covers all of them with the exception of the immediate 6…Bf5. The endgame arising after 7.Qf3 followed by Bxf6 will be dealt with in the second database.

This survey will give even something more important than just a reliable repertoire against Queen’s Gambit Declined. After studying the material, you will improve your understanding of the highly important Carlsbad structure. This is a structure that you might get in a variety of different opening lines.

As a rule, in the Carlsbad structure, GM Roiz advocates the setup based on Nge2. It’s not a surprise that he dedicates the last 4 chapters to this position:

After studying the chapters, you will understand how to correctly implement the central strategy based on the advance e3-e4.

Obviously, in the previous chapters, Roiz examines all Black’s deviations on the way to this position. Some of these deviations are very tricky and fashionable. Therefore, you shall pay close attention to all the lines. Rather than memorizing concrete moves, however, you should focus on typical ideas and patterns.

Below, you shall see how the author presents the database himself.
