Typical Structures in the Advance Variation of French Defence
The main position of the Advance Variation arises after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5
GM Petar Arnaudov introduces the subject in the following way:
The Advanced Variation in French Defence was always considered very interesting for White but was somehow underestimated. In recent years, this variation has a new life. White found some fascinating gambit ideas, and nowadays, this has become a deadly weapon in the hands of White players. White has a space advantage from the start, but Black is getting counterplay against White’s centre and sometimes on the queenside. Precise knowledge of the theory is not required here; I believe that if you learn good tactical and positional ideas, you will be ready to play this line, even without studying 20+ moves theory. I will explain the main concepts and most critical structures in this lecture. I will also give you some theoretical guidelines. Please note that I am not providing you with a complete repertoire, but you can use my suggestions as a base.
In the article featuring the typical pawn structures, GM Arnaudov examines the following 3 typical pawn structures:
Structure 1
This is one of the essential structures. We usually get it when White takes on c5.
Structure 2
This is another fundamental structure in Advanced French. We reach it after White takes Black’s knight on f5.
Structure 3
This important pawn structure arises when Black plays …f7-f6 followed by …fxe5.
In the lecture featuring the typical pawn structures, you will find 11 extensively annotated model games.
Below, you can find one of them.
